The Power of Asking for Support
I wanted to swim with the sea lions, They were only about 30 feet away -
I was geared up and everyone was already in the water, all I needed was to jump out of the boat and I would be there too. Two minutes tops.
So why couldn’t I do it?
For an iota, I let my mind focus on other things and run wild. The unknown of the deep water, how cold I might feel, the possibility of having to turn back if the Sea Lions didn’t want me near them. As I sat and pondered, the boat got farther and farther away, increasing the distance between me and the animals I so desperately wanted to swim with. I needed to make a choice.
Everyone was shouting my name and encouraging me. I knew how to swim but suddenly everything felt impossible.
I finally called out, asking for help and my guide appeared with out a judgement, hand out stretched, saying we would go together and that he knew the way.
That was all the reassurance I needed, I jumped. Eventually, when my flipper broke - it wasn’t the end of the world; I adapted and I kept moving because now I knew what was on the other side. My brain stopped dwelling on the “what if’s” and I just let myself be in that moment, rather than worry about the next one and I immersed myself in the under water world around me.
You’re probably wondering what this has to do with health and fitness, right?
My point is this:
Much like I knew all I had to do was jump in the water, Most of us are pretty aware of what it is we want to change when it comes to our health and fitness.
Even though we may have some of the tools in place or on standby, the question is HOW do we put them together and build something? That’s where a good coaching relationship comes in, to support you through building a strong foundation on which your health behaviors and lifestyle will sit.
